Weekend trips in the East Valley pose challenges

Weekend trips in the East Valley pose challenges

Drivers who need to enter or exit the Valley from the East face challenges today, and they will continue through Sunday.

The Arizona Department of Transportation announced earlier this week that two separate projects related to the Broadway Curve Improvement Project will cause problems along Interstate 10 and Broadway Road in Tempe.

There are ways to avoid and circumvent the construction, but they will require drivers to take extra care and time, according to ADOT.

Broadway Road will be closed this weekend between 48e and 52n/a streets, and eastbound I-10 will be closed between US 60 and the 202 loop.

Both closures began at 10 p.m. Friday and will be in place until 4 a.m. Monday, July 25, according to ADOT.

Work along I-10 is caused by crews moving work areas into the median to prepare for the installation of digital billboards.

This will cause the following ramps to close and detour suggestions from ADOT:

  • I-10 eastbound on-ramps between Broadway and Ray roads.
  • Westbound US 60 ramp to eastbound I-10.
  • The eastbound I-10 HOV ramp to eastbound US 60.
  • US 60 HOV ramp westbound to westbound I-10.

To get past the closure, East Valley drivers should use the 202 eastbound loop or US 60 eastbound to the 101 southbound loop to the 202 westbound loop to access the I-10.

West Valley drivers heading into East Valley can bypass the closure using Loop 202. From I-10 and 59th Avenue, head south then east on Loop 202 to merge onto I -10 eastbound just south of Chandler Boulevard.

In Tempe, Broadway Road work is needed, according to ADOT, to realign the intersection of Broadway Road and 52nd Street as part of the Broadway Curve project.

The intersection is moved south so that workers can make improvements to the north. Following this weekend’s work, motorists will use a temporary traffic light at the intersection.

To help accomplish this, this weekend Broadway Road in Tempe will be closed in both directions between 48th and 52nd streets.

At the same time, the eastbound Interstate 10 connecting ramp between 48th Street and Broadway Road and the westbound I-10 exit ramp at Broadway Road will be closed.

The eastbound I-10 off-ramp at Broadway Road will remain open. Drivers will not be able to access Broadway Road from 52nd Street and should use University Drive instead, ADOT officials said.

Detours

  • Westbound Broadway Road detour: Drivers on Broadway Road who need to access westbound Broadway Road should use Priest Drive northbound to University Drive westbound to State Route 143 southbound to access Broadway Road west of the closure.
  • Detour from westbound I-10 to westbound Broadway Road: Drivers on westbound I-10 who need to access westbound Broadway Road should use westbound I-10 to 40th Street southbound to access Broadway Road west of the closure.
  • Eastbound Broadway Road Diversion: Drivers on eastbound Broadway Road and eastbound I-10 who need to access eastbound Broadway Road should use southbound 48th Street to eastbound Southern Avenue to at Priest Drive northbound to access Broadway Road east of the closure.
  • Detour from westbound I-10 to eastbound Broadway Road: Drivers on westbound I-10 who need to access eastbound Broadway Road should use SR 143 northbound to University Drive eastbound. east to Priest Drive southbound to access Broadway Road east of the closure.
